MOSCOW (Sputnik) - In spite of its crusade of expanding sanctions against Russia, Brussels won't be able to influence Moscow's sovereign policy, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.
"Apparently, Brussels refuses to accept that it has failed to achieve its goals — namely, to sway our sovereign policy — and that it never will. But since the European bureaucrats are no longer able to halt the relentless spiral of sanctions, and, more importantly, are incapable of anything else, all that remains for them is to threaten us with new restrictions," Zakharova said during a briefing.
Russia will take harsh retaliatory steps in response to the latest EU sanctions package, the spokeswoman forewarned.

On Iran

Any ground operation in Iran would trigger a further escalation of tensions, and would risk irreparable consequences, Zakharova cautioned.

"Despite the ongoing negotiation process, the situation remains extremely unstable at the moment. Any ground operation will mean a further escalation of tension, which is filled with literally irreparable consequences not only for each of the parties, but also, undoubtedly, for regional and global security," Zakharova said at a briefing.
